Naugatuck, CT - An amusing LB story

From: tempusfugitmd (donnas28@juno.com) | Date: 2003-03-25 20:03:05 UTC
After nearly a year of accompanying the kids and me on our
letterboxing hikes, my husband decided he needed a logbook and
personal stamp. I was happy to oblige. For the last 2 months "Dead
Duck Chuck" has been playing catch-up, sometimes revisiting boxes
we've been to so he can add his stamp. Today he was in Connecticut
for business and found the time to run over to the Naugatuck Cemetery
box where we had visited last fall. He quickly found the monument
where the letterbox is hidden. Just inside was a small gold cardboard
box held closed by a rubber band. This was not the usual letterbox
container, but sometimes replacements are made in a pinch to damaged
boxes, so...he opened the box. Whoa! Someone had "buried" his
deceased gerbil just above the letterbox! Better than finding a live
snake, I suppose, but still a bit unnerving. So, Beth and Mike, your
letterbox has company. And, no, Chuck did not ink up the gerbil and
stamp it into his log.

Too funny, Beth!! Obviously I did miss that post. Otherwise, I could
have warned Chuck. (Could have, but *wouldn't* have! LOL) What are
the odds of some hapless Marylander visiting the very next day?!

RIP, little critter.

I think the chances are slim to none~~~~Did Chuck put the little critter
back? The problem is, as a Mom, if some kid "buried" his dearly departed, I
would hate to upset him by....well, leaving it in an alternate location for
all eternity, if you know what I mean.
I was hoping Chuck might have made a letterboxing executive decision and
just disposed of "the golden box". Probably not, huh!
Did He at least find the letterbox and stamp his book?? Maybe I'll carve a
dead gerbil stamp in honor of Dead Duck Chuck...it's the least I could do!!

My son wants you (or me) to carve an inky pressed gerbil face
stamp. "No, not just the face!" he cries.

Okay, you sickos! I guess if I can carve a dead duck, I can carve a
dead gerbil. Hey, even J.J. Audobon worked with formerly living
models. I'll even make it a little gold foil logbook. Should it be a
hitchhiker or a permanent resident of a certain little cemetery in CT?

Hey Donna,

I already have the perfect gold foil box to keep it in...I just have to
empty it of it's former contents!!!
I think it should be a permanant box, after all with two boxes in one
headstone you could be killing two birds..er um, gerbils with one trip!

I know this good psychiatrist if you folks feel one is
necessary.... ;o)

But seriously, after reading about cemetaries and dead gerbils, I'm
itching to get this letterbox. Hey, I'm as twisted and morbid as the
next person.... And heck, Naugatuck even looks like it might be
close enough to the Appalachian Trail to try it this summer! We'll
have to see how my schedule is going by then, though.... =)

Farewell!

Ryan,

The Appalachian Trail actually runs through part of Naugatuck. Please feel
free to drop by anytime.....during my trek on the AT I learned to cook a
chicken in my backpack!! I'd be happy to pass along the recipe. I've lived
vicariously through you and your journey's. Thanks for the memories.
As far as the psychiatrist goes, sanity is hightly over rated!!

RIP small gerbil!!

Beth, we really have too much spare time! But I just can't let this
go. The creation of the "Gerbil Memorial Box" is underway. Did you
know when you Google images of gerbils some really disturbing stuff
comes up? And here is the epitaph for the logbook:

Here lies the body of Gerbil Anon.
His soul has flown, his family gone.
In Naugatuck his bones reside,
His carcass turned to...Naugahide?

(Sorry!)

Donna

ps: Chuck said the rubber band broke when he opened the box, so your
little friend is not secured in his final resting place.

Really?! I thought it just passed fairly close, I didn't realize it
actually runs through part of the town. Well now I *HAVE* to get
that letterbox! =) I'll definitely try to look you up when I make
it that far.

You cooked a whole chicken on the trail? I'd love to watch someone
do that, but I'm not sure I'm up for carrying even small chickens in
my backpack! =) Are there pictures somewhere, though, because I
really would like to see that!

OMGGGGGGG!!!! Donna you are too funny!!!! Naugahide!! It's too bad that
Naugas are no longer found in these parts but back in the 50's and 60's the
demand was just too great for their hides. Thus wiping out an entire
population.
Our box could be a double tribute!! I live quite close to the cemetary,
after the "burial" we could have a reception for all grieving letterboxers
at my place.....I hear we should expect quite a few out of town guests!!!!

Butterfly,

You are more than welcome.....as are any of our letterboxing families. I'll
bet this will be the first exchange funeral in letterboxing history!!

Well, Chuck and I have to be there! We have extended family in the
Wallingford area and were planning to come up for a few days during
the kids' spring break. Although today he told me we may be going to
San Francisco instead, so I'll let you know.

Well, you are all certainly invited and I will wait until Chuck and Donna
are able to attend the sorrowful event. After all they(well at least Chuck
was, I've always had my reservations about that Donna)were close to the
dearly departed.
I even heard from Ryan who is hoping to lend some support at such a
difficult time.......I hope the dearly departed soul isn't trapped in
Naugtory!! (That limbo between heaven and hell) Well, in Naugatuck we have
our own brand of it!!

Besides if you wear black, I'll bring hotdogs!!

You'll be lucky if I arrive with my clothes clean! But I might be
able to whip out a mean Mac 'n' Cheese and I'll even bring a stove to
cook with! =)

There's nothing better than a funeral to bring everyone together.
Except for maybe a wedding, but I haven't heard of any of those in
the making recently.

Are you kidding? I think the appropriately dressed letterboxing funeral
attendee would wear blaze orange. And keep their tissues in little
freezer bags :) rtrw

Has an official date for the solem ceremony for our
dearly adopted departed been set?
TeamGreenDragon would like to pay their respect.
(We'll bring goodies for the reception, too).
TeamGreenDragon - (BTW - has anyone named the gerbil??)

And I, for one, am thankful for that.

Date to be announced according to Donna and Chucks schedule!!! In honor of
the dearly departed I thought it might be best to retire the Cemetary Search
box and replace it with the RIP Gerbil Anon box!!
